This Wednesday come by 3089A Postle Hall at 11:40am or join the livestream to hear Dr. Alex Valm talk on “Structure-function relationships in the human oral microbiome”.
Alex’s group studies the relationship between structure and function in the human microbiome, with a special emphasis on how physical structure and biogeography of human-associated microbiome communities influences health and disease. The Valm Lab uses the human oral microbiome as a model system for studying microbial community structure and assembly. Alex has been a leader in the development and implementation of the CLASI-FISH technique to label microbes of interest with combinations of probes coupled with spectral imaging to allow use of fluorophores with highly overlapping excitation and emission spectra. Alex is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Albany (State U of New York).
